Cryptids of South Carolina
What cryptids are in South Carolina? The best-known are Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp, Bigfoot and Gray Man of Pawleys Island.
South Carolina’s signature cryptid crawled out of Scape Ore Swamp. In the early hours of June 29, 1988, 17-year-old Christopher Davis reported that a green, scaly, seven-foot creature with red eyes and three-fingered hands attacked his car as he changed a tire near the swamp outside Bishopville, in Lee County. More reports and damaged vehicles followed, Lee County Sheriff Liston Truesdale fielded calls from news outlets around the world, and the “Lizard Man” became a summer sensation. No proof emerged, and skeptics cite hoaxes, bears and the excitement of a media frenzy.

LOCAL LEGENDThe legends of South Carolina
The Lizard Man is now part of Lee County’s identity, appearing on souvenirs and in local celebrations, and new reports surfaced in 2008 and beyond. Beyond Bishopville, South Carolina’s blackwater swamps, longleaf pine forests and floodplain hardwoods offer plenty of room for legends: Bigfoot reports come from the Francis Marion National Forest north of Charleston, the old-growth bottomlands of Congaree National Park and the Sumter National Forest in the Upstate.
Lake Murray, the large reservoir west of Columbia, has its own serpent tale, and the Lowcountry’s Gullah Geechee communities preserve a rich tradition of spirits and haunts, such as the boo hag, that belongs to their living culture.
