Who we are

Cryptid Map is an independent website about cryptids and folklore. This policy explains what information is collected when you visit, and the choices you have.

Information we collect

We don’t ask you to create an account and we don’t collect your name, email address or other personal details unless you choose to email us.

Like most websites, our hosting provider (GitHub Pages) processes technical information such as your IP address and browser type to deliver pages and keep the service secure.

Your region and location

When you choose a region, Cryptid Map saves that choice in your browser’s local storage so the home page can show your region next time. It stays on your device; we never receive it.

If you press “Use my location”, your browser asks for permission and then gives your approximate position to the page, which uses it — on your device only — to find the nearest state or country. Your location is not sent to us or stored.

Advertising

We use Google AdSense to show ads. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites, to limit how often you see an ad and to measure ad performance.

You can turn off personalised advertising in Google’s Ad Settings, and learn more about how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ personalised ads at aboutads.info.

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent through Google’s consent message before personalised ads are shown. Visitors in US states with privacy laws can use the “Do not sell or share my personal information” link Google displays to opt out.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand which pages are popular and how people find the site. It uses cookies to collect information such as the pages you visit, how long you stay, your general location (city or region) and your device type. This information is reported to us in aggregate; it does not identify you. You can install the Google Analytics opt-out add-on to stop it.

Embedded videos

Videos from the Internet Archive and YouTube load only after you press play. YouTube videos use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode. Once a video loads, the provider may set its own cookies under its own privacy policy.

Links to other sites

News headlines, sources and videos link to other websites. We are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices.

Children

Cryptid Map is a general-audience site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your choices

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, clear your saved region by clearing this site’s data, and opt out of personalised ads and analytics using the links above.

Changes and contact

We may update this policy from time to time; the date at the top shows the latest version. Questions? Contact us at contact@cryptidmap.com.
