About Cryptid Map
Cryptid Map is an independent field guide to cryptids — the creatures people report and pass down in folklore, but that science has never confirmed. It starts where you are: pick your state or country and see the creatures reported there, the places they’re seen, the history of the sightings and the latest local news.
We cover all 50 US states and dozens of countries, from Bigfoot and the Mothman to the Loch Ness Monster, the Yeti and the Yowie, along with hundreds of lesser-known local legends. The site is free to use and supported by advertising.
How we research
Every cryptid file is written from published sources — newspapers, museums, historical societies, books, academic papers and government records — and lists them at the bottom of the page. We write in our own words and never copy articles.
We report claims as claims. Each file sets out what witnesses describe and what could explain it — misidentified animals, hoaxes, folklore — so readers can make up their own minds. Indigenous traditions are described as living culture, with context, and some sacred beings are left out at their communities’ request.
The news desk gathers headlines from public news indexes every day and sorts them by creature and place automatically. Each headline links to its publisher. Videos are embedded from the Internet Archive or from the creators’ own channels; we upload only footage that is public domain, Creative Commons or our own.
