Gray Man of Pawleys Island

Also known as The Gray Man, Grey Man

Pawleys Island, Georgetown County, South CarolinaFIRST REPORTED: 1822SPECTRAL & SUPERNATURAL

A ghostly figure in gray said to walk the beach at Pawleys Island before hurricanes, warning residents to flee – and sparing the homes of those who listen.

Pawleys Island is a narrow barrier island on South Carolina’s Grand Strand, one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast. It is also exposed to some of the Atlantic’s worst hurricanes, and its signature legend is a ghost who comes to warn of them. For generations residents and visitors have told of a quiet man dressed in gray, seen walking the beach or standing on a dune in the days before a big storm, who vanishes when approached.

Accounts disagree about who he was. The most popular version ties him to the great hurricane of 1822, which killed around 300 people along the Georgetown and Horry coast: a young man hurrying back to the island to see his fiancée took a shortcut through the marsh, was swallowed by quicksand, and later appeared to her on the beach to warn her to leave before the storm struck. Other tellings make him a Confederate soldier coming home in 1865, or a member of one of the island’s old planter families.

Believers say that those who see the Gray Man and heed him come through safely, and that the houses of those he warns are left standing while their neighbors’ are destroyed. Stories have been attached to many storms – most famously Hurricane Hazel in 1954, which devastated the island, and Hurricane Hugo in 1989, when a couple told the television show Unsolved Mysteries that a sighting saved them. Claims resurfaced with Hurricane Florence in 2018 and Hurricane Ian in 2022.

Local historian Lee Brockington suspects the legend became much better known after Hazel, when the resort was rebuilding and eager to bring visitors back, and that vacationers carried it home across the state. It now sits alongside the hammock and the island’s weathered beach houses as part of Pawleys Island’s identity.

Notable sightings

  1. 1822The great hurricane Pawleys Island and the Georgetown coast

A powerful hurricane killed around 300 people along the northern South Carolina coast. The most common version of the legend begins with a young man who died in quicksand around this time and appeared to warn his fiancée.

  2. October 1954Hurricane Hazel Pawleys Island

Hazel struck the Carolinas as a major hurricane and devastated the island. Several stories say the Gray Man warned residents beforehand, and the legend spread widely in the years that followed.

  3. September 1989Hurricane Hugo Pawleys Island

A local couple later told Unsolved Mysteries that seeing the Gray Man before Hugo made them evacuate, and that their home came through the storm intact.

  4. September 2018Hurricane Florence Pawleys Island

Ahead of Florence, social media buzzed with reports and a video of a shadowy figure on a dock, renewing interest in the legend.

What could explain it?

  • Coastal residents have every reason to be watchful before hurricanes; a story about a ghostly warning reinforces the life-saving habit of evacuating early.
  • Houses that survive a hurricane while neighbors’ are destroyed is common, owing to construction, elevation and chance, and survivors may connect their luck to a remembered figure afterward.
  • Sightings are reported after the storm, not documented before it, which allows memory and storytelling to shape them.
  • Historians suggest the tale grew after 1954 partly because a recovering resort town valued a romantic local legend.

Legend, culture and tourism

The Gray Man is one of South Carolina’s best-loved ghost stories, retold by writers such as Nancy Roberts in South Carolina Ghosts, featured on Unsolved Mysteries, and revived in the news before almost every hurricane that threatens the Grand Strand. Ghost tours in nearby Georgetown and Murrells Inlet include his story.
