Loveland Frog
Also known as Loveland Frogman, Loveland Lizard, Loveland Frogmen

A four-foot frog-faced humanoid said to haunt the Little Miami River at Loveland, Ohio, reported in 1955 and by two police officers in 1972.
The Loveland Frog – or Frogman – is a small humanoid with a frog’s face and leathery skin said to live along the Little Miami River in Loveland, a suburb northeast of Cincinnati. In most tellings it stands three to four feet tall on its hind legs, and it has become one of Ohio’s best-loved oddities.
The legend begins with a story set in 1955. According to the most common version, a businessman driving through the Branch Hill area late one night saw three upright, frog-like figures by the roadside, each about three or four feet tall; some retellings put them under a bridge and give one of them a wand that threw sparks. The account was passed along through UFO and folklore circles rather than contemporary newspapers, and its details vary from version to version.
The story gained a firmer footing in March 1972. In the early hours of March 3, Loveland police officer Ray Shockey reported that an animal several feet long, which seemed to crouch like a frog, crossed Riverside Drive in his headlights near the river and then rose up to get over the guardrail. About two weeks later his colleague Mark Matthews saw a similar creature on the same stretch of road – and shot it.
Decades later Matthews explained the ending that the legend usually leaves out: the animal he shot was a large iguana, probably an escaped or abandoned pet, missing its tail, and Shockey agreed it was what he had seen. Matthews has called the frogman story a hoax that outgrew the facts. That has not slowed the legend: a 2016 report from Pokémon Go players of a giant frog standing up by Lake Isabella revived interest, and in 2023 Loveland adopted the Frog as an official city mascot.
