Pascagoula River Creatures

Also known as Pascagoula abduction, Pascagoula UFO incident, Hickson–Parker encounter

Pascagoula River, Pascagoula, MississippiFIRST REPORTED: 1973HUMANOIDS & STRANGE BEINGS

Gray, clawed, legless beings that two Pascagoula shipyard workers said floated from a glowing craft and seized them by the river on October 11, 1973.

On the night of October 11, 1973, two men fishing from an old pier on the west bank of the Pascagoula River in Pascagoula, Mississippi, walked into the Jackson County sheriff’s office with one of the strangest stories ever told on the Gulf Coast. Charles Hickson and his young co-worker Calvin Parker Jr., both employed at a local shipyard, said a glowing, buzzing craft had appeared over the water and that three bizarre beings had floated out, lifted them aboard and examined them before setting them back on the bank.

The creatures themselves are what make the case unique. In Hickson’s telling they were roughly five feet tall, pale gray with wrinkled-looking skin, and had no visible neck. Where a mouth and eyes should be there were only slits; the nose and ears were pointed protrusions; the hands ended in crab-like pincers; and in place of legs and feet there was a single rounded, pedestal-like limb on which they glided rather than walked. Investigator Joe Nickell has noted that nothing quite like them has been reported before or since.

Sheriff Fred Diamond and Captain Glenn Ryder initially suspected a prank, so they left the two men alone in a room with a tape recorder secretly running. Instead of sharing a laugh, the recording captured a shaken Parker saying he was going half crazy and Hickson telling him they had better start believing. Officers came away convinced the men were genuinely frightened. The next day The Mississippi Press ran the story, the wire services picked it up, and Pascagoula was suddenly famous.

Prominent UFO researchers J. Allen Hynek and James Harder interviewed the pair and announced that they believed the men had experienced something real. Hickson passed a polygraph arranged by a promoter, appeared on The Dick Cavett Show and the game show To Tell the Truth, and later self-published a book. Parker withdrew from public life for decades, then told his own story in a 2018 memoir. Both men stood by their accounts until their deaths – Hickson in 2011 and Parker in 2023.

Today the case is one of the most famous alien-abduction reports in the world, often ranked second only to Betty and Barney Hill’s. In 2019 a historical marker was unveiled at Lighthouse Park, on the riverbank near the reported landing site, with Parker in attendance – a rare official monument to an alleged close encounter.

What witnesses describe

Three humanoid figures about 5 feet (1.5 m) tall, pale gray and wrinkled, with no neck, slit-like openings for eyes and mouth, pointed nose and ear projections, pincer or claw hands and a single rounded leg-like base instead of feet. They were said to float or glide and to lift the men without effort.

The local historical society and Pascagoula Main Street unveiled a marker commemorating the reported abduction on the riverbank, attended by Parker and Hickson’s son.

What could explain it?

  • Hypnagogic hallucination: Joe Nickell argued that Hickson may have dozed off and experienced a vivid waking dream with sleep paralysis, matching his reports of paralysis, floating and bright light.
  • Suggestion and ‘folie à deux’: Parker initially told officers he had passed out and remembered nothing, and may later have adopted details of Hickson’s account.
  • Hoax: UFO skeptic Philip J. Klass pointed to inconsistencies in Hickson’s descriptions, his refusal to take a polygraph from an experienced police examiner, and his financial motives, and concluded the case was a hoax.
  • Context of the 1973 UFO wave: many residents of the Gulf Coast were reporting lights in the sky that autumn, creating an atmosphere in which an ambiguous experience could be read as an alien encounter.
  • Supporting the men’s sincerity: the secretly recorded conversation and the officers’ impressions suggest that, whatever happened, the witnesses themselves were genuinely frightened.

Legend, culture and tourism

The Pascagoula case is a landmark of American UFO lore, retold in books by both witnesses, countless documentaries and, in 2024, Netflix’s Files of the Unexplained. Hickson’s 1973 appearance on the game show To Tell the Truth survives as a period curiosity. The city of Pascagoula has embraced its odd claim to fame with a historical marker at Lighthouse Park and anniversary events.
